Application Info

Greyhounds 2 Go Adoptions places retired racers with adoptive homes that are committed to be responsible pet owners. We have formal procedures that find loving homes for our retired racers. It is important to know the procedure that we go through to find the perfect home for our Greyhounds.

First step in the application process is to fill out our online application. We ask that you read our information about greyhounds prior to applying. Once the application has been filled out and sent in you should here from a home representative within 72 hours. At the first phone call a home representative will go over your application.

The next step will be a home visit. The home representative will schedule a home visit with the entire potential adoptive family. During the home visit the home representative will bring one of their personal greyhounds to the visit. In bringing a greyhound into your house you can see their temperament with everyone and everything in the home. You have the chance to ask any questions regarding greyhounds that you can think of. You also see the size of a greyhound in your house and also what may have to be dog proofed before a greyhound can live there. You will then hear from the home representatives within 24 hours to let you know if you have been approved.

We then take your application information and the information from the home visit and look for a greyhound that will fit with your family. You are more then welcome to ask your representative to see a greyhound that you may be interested. The representative will let you know if that could be the greyhound for you. As the greyhounds are in foster homes, we know what kind of family they will fit with.

Once there is a greyhound that we feel is a good match with your family, we will tell you which greyhound from the web site we would like to bring over. At no time are you obligated to take the first greyhound that we bring to show at your home. We will continue to look until we find a perfect match with your family.

At the time of adoption of your new greyhound we will have you sign an adoption agreement form. You will have to acknowledge that your entire family agrees to all on the agreement form. Adoption agreement reads as follows:

  • Greyhounds are always to be on leash whenever it is outdoors, unless it is in a totally fenced area.
  • A current license, your I.D. and G2G I.D. must be on your greyhound at all times.
  • If you can no longer keep or want your greyhound you MUST notify and RETURN the greyhound ONLY to Greyhounds 2 Go Adoptions.
  • Greyhounds are strictly INDOOR pets and will live and sleep in the house.
  • The former life of a greyhound is not always known. Greyhounds 2 Go Adoptions test all their greyhounds for their temperaments. To the best of our knowledge they get along with children.
  • We test all of our greyhounds for their reaction to cats and other small animals, but we can not guarantee the safety of the cats and other animals.
  • All of our greyhounds are spayed/neutered, had their teeth cleaned. Have had all internal and external parasites removed.
  • A non-refundable adoption fee of $200.00 in cash, check or money order to Greyhounds 2 Go Adoptions in San Diego County or Tucson, Pima County.

Once you have your new greyhound in your home feel free to contact your home representative if there are any questions. Your home representative will contact you within 48 hours to see how everything is going. We want to make certain that everything goes well with the placements.

Why adopt a senior or special needs greyhound...

Senior Greyhounds

A Greyhound is considered a "senior" when it reaches seven years of age or older.  Although senior greyhounds are typically finalizing their retirement, they make a great companion as well as an excellent couch decoration.  Senior greyhounds have many added bonuses in their personality that some younger greyhounds do not posess.  Most senior greyhounds seem to have endless tolerance and patience where children are concerned.  Senior greyhounds are docile and gentle in their ways which also makes them wonderful companions for the average adopter, but also for the elderly. There are two typical reasons why a senior greyhound may be searching for their forever home:One instance is when they arrive at the adoption kennel at a young age and soon find a family who would like them to be a part of the family and share a home full of love.  Eventually changes occur due to several reasons: divorce, relocation, the owners become elderly or have health complications and can no longer care for their greyhound, the family may grow and add children or additional pets to their home, or they simply no longer wish to share their home with a senior greyhound who is now more relaxed in their ways.  Whichever the reason, the senior greyhound is once again residing at the adoption kennel and looking for a new home.  Another instance is when a greyhound is used for the breeding of other racing greyhounds during their time at the race track.  Once the greyhound is no longer capable of performing this job, they are released to an adoption agency to find their forever home.  This can happen at any age, but many senior greyhounds are typically between 8 and 12 years of age who are released from this duty.

No matter the circumstances, providing a home for a senior greyhound is an outstanding decision.  Sharing the golden-years with them is both a rewarding experience for the adopters as well as for the senior greyhound.

Special Needs Greyhound

Special-Needs Greyhounds Special-needs greyhounds are typically just your normal, loveable greyhound who simply just needs it's adopter to give them a bit more care.  Some have medications which they need on a regular schedule, such as a pill daily, and some must have special care, such as a house with no stairs due to an injury or careful monitoring due to certain medical conditions such as diabetes or seizures.  Special-needs greyhounds still make loyal and devoted pets, they just need a bit more care than the average pet.
Special-needs greyhounds have a heart made of gold and personality more special than anything.  Sharing a home with a special-needs greyhounds is an experience that the adopter will remember for a lifetime.  The love they share with their family will never be forgotten, nor will it every leave their hearts.
